Hermanus Kite School | Kite Surfing

Our lessons are given in the safety of the Kleinriver and Botriver lagunes. Water is waist deep and warm in summer. Winds vary, but are generally on the lighter side which is perfect for teaching. No lessons are given when the wind gets stronger than 20 knots.

All equipment is supplied, that is wetsuit, kites, lines, harness, impact jacket and hard hat.

The course is divided in 3 sections. A minimum of 2 hours is spent on each section. We found this to be necessary to communicate all the necessary safety precautions.

That means that you will have to do a minimum of 6 hours before you will be able to kiteboard safely on your own. On average it takes between 3 and 5 lessons of 2 hours each, that is 6 to 10 hours, to get going.

The different sections of the course is as follows:

1.)Flying the Kite
This happens on land
The basic working of a kite
All the safety features and precautions
Hand signals
Launching and retrieving
Power Zones
Figure eight
Looping and unlooping

2.) Body drag without a Board
This happens in water
Dragging across the wind
Dragging downwind
Dragging upwind
Water relaunch

3.)On the Board
This happens in water
The power stroke
Taking off on the board
Edging and keeping your line going across the wind
Going down wind
Going upwind

A lesson costs R600 for 2 hours.
If a section is not finished in a lesson, it is carried over to the next lesson.

Happy Sailing!
